Wrangler Wednesday: Employees take their Wrangler skills off-road at the FCA US Toledo Assembly Complex

The FCA US Toledo Assembly Complex is home to some of the most advanced manufacturing technologies in the industry, so it’s only natural that its “backyard” contains a unique adventure for employees to experience the Company’s iconic vehicle: the Jeep® Wrangler.

Designed as part of the North Plant’s “Toledo Way” employee training program, crews built three courses (Street, Trail Rated, Rubicon) in 340 man-hours over 11 days. Employees, most of whom had never driven a Wrangler, had the opportunity to drive what they build inside the fence line of the assembly complex.

The training began with employees riding with a professional driver on the Rubicon Course (the most challenging), afterwards gripping the Jeep’s steering wheel for themselves and carefully maneuvering the vehicles up and across 85 tons of rock and 3,150 tons of dirt on the Trail Rated course.

“We wanted each and every employee, every time they contributed an element to the Wrangler, to know that they are part of the Jeep history,” said Adam Hillock, Human Resources Manager at the Toledo Assembly Complex. “They’re part of that legend. And that adds to the overall focus on safety and quality.”

The off-road experience was one segment of a three-part employee training program, known as the “Toledo Way”, which took place while work was done to retool the North plant to build the all-new 2018 Jeep Wrangler. During the downtime, employees also participated in a comprehensive training program at the University of Toledo and in a variety of local community service projects.

Hello from the Motor City! I’m Edward Cardenas and I’m multimedia editor for Stellantis. As a lifelong Detroiter, I have been surrounded by the automotive industry. I’ve had members of my immediate and extended family work in the industry. I’ve covered it as a journalist and advocated for it as a communications professional. I have also experienced the thrills of the industry while riding in a race car at nearly 200 miles per hour. Having this breadth of experience, I look forward to drawing upon my experiences to bring a wide range of stories, photos and videos about Chrysler, FIAT and Alfa Romeo to Stellantis Digital Media. When I’m not covering my brands, I’m spending time with my wife and two boys.
